Kopisanangan kumaa toinsanan!😁 (hello to everyone!)
Well, I was called to publish this blog because of one incident that I thought quite embarrassing for me as a Dusun . Here's the story. I went to climbed Mount Kinabalu few months ago and during our journey to Laban Rata that day, a middle aged man (a porter) went passed us. He mentioned there would be a 'kukuanga' somewhere throughout the pathway and I was like, I remembered my dad said that word before but I don't remember what it means. Maybe he noticed my confused face expression, then he asked about my race. I answered, "I'm a Dusun." Then he said, "kau tidak tahu apa itu?" (You don't know what that is?). No answer came from my mouth. I then turned my head towards my friend asking for an answer. She said it's a pitcher plant and I was like......ohhhhhh, now I remember. I knew, he must thought that I am a Dusun yet know nothing about the language.
Well, it is not completely nothing...cause I do understand when people communicate in Dusun. It just that we don't say about the word that often and my daily conversation with family members is in rojak (mixed) languages. So, that's why my knowledge of Dusun vocabularies is limited to what I heard from people around me.
That day has triggered me on how shallow my knowledge is towards my own ethnicity, language and culture. While I'm busy mastering other languages, I forgot that my mother tongue also has its beauty that should be preserved. Atagak nopo boros nga atagak noh oh bangsa ka di boros Dusun (when people don't speak their mother tongue anymore, their race will eventually vanish).
Dusun or Kadazandusun is the biggest ethnic living in Sabah, Malaysia which is famous with the tagline 'the land below the wind'. The word animals in Dusun Language is known as 'tayam' or 'dupot'.
So, below are the lists of animals and their names in Dusun that commonly use by the Dusun community around me. I'm sorry that I could not provide all the names as I'm still learning and feel free to correct me or share new infos in the comment section below. (for those Dusun people who visited this blog, remember that it's never too late to learn our mother tongue).
